Pain management can be an effective treatment option for various types of pain, including musculoskeletal, spinal, and neuropathic pain disorders. This non-surgical treatment option allows patients to receive the care they need in order to avoid acute, subacute, or chronic pain.
Depending on the type of pain, Jordan Sudberg MD, AAPM&R, and Thomas Lavigrata PA-C will evaluate the source of pain using advanced medical imaging and diagnostic muscle nerve tests. Pain Management Consultations
Chronic pain is one of the most common forms of disability. A pain management consultation begins with a comprehensive evaluation of personal and family medical history, as well as history of medications or treatments. The doctor proceeds to determine the degree, frequency, source, and possible causes of pain. The doctor goes on to locate the pain and conducts a physical exam. From there, a personalized treatment plan is devised based on all factors. If the cause of the pain cannot be determined during the consultation, more tests may be requested, the results of which are discussed in the upcoming consultations. A pain management consultation is beneficial because it provides the patient with techniques to manage despite the pain, it can control symptoms and complement disease treatment, it helps establish a good doctor-patient relationship.
Ultrasound
Ultrasound is commonly found in interventional pain management. Ultrasound therapy uses sound waves and heat to treat inflammation from injuries. This type of therapy also promotes tissue healing in order to speed up an individual’s recovery process. The ultrasound is conducted by first choosing a small area to work on for anywhere from five to 10 minutes. The gel is applied either to the transducer head or to your skin, which helps the sound waves equally distribute into the skin. During this treatment, the ultrasound machine will be repeatedly moved over and around the specific area.
Trigger Point Injections
Trigger point injections are used on areas of muscle containing trigger points that cannot be released from above the skin. These injections are used to treat irritated nerves and reduce pain around the body. Our office offers trigger point injections with lidocaine and sarapin.
Facet Pain and Joint Injections
These spinal injections are used to reduce joint pain in individuals. After the injection, a patient will be asked to perform a series of activities to assess how their pain has changed. These injections result in an increase in mobility and a decrease in nerve pain.
Orthovisc and Steroid Injections
These steroid injections deliver relief directly to the source of pain and are considered safe for almost all patients. This series of injections will take place for approximately a month of treatment. Steroid injections can be used to treat joint and muscle injuries as well as nerve damage resulting from these injuries.
